EMDR Therapy

A Calm, Personal Approach To Therapy

EMDR Therapy: A Proven Approach to Healing Trauma

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help you process and overcome the effects of trauma, anxiety, and other distressing experiences. By supporting the brain’s natural healing processes, EMDR offers a path to recovery that is both effective and empowering.

EMDR focuses on resolving traumatic memories and the emotional distress linked to them. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it uses bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements, taps, or sounds to help reprocess painful experiences. This allows your mind to release and reframe stuck memories, reducing their emotional charge.

Originally developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is now recognised as a leading treatment for trauma by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and other international bodies.

The EMDR Process

How Does EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR  is based on the idea that trauma can intefere with the brain’s natural ability to process memories. By using bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps “unstick” these memories so they can be processed more natuarally.

Here’s what to expect during EMDR sessions:

1

Assessment and Preparation

We begin by identifying the experiences you want to work with and making sure you feel safe, supported and ready to start.

2

Bilateral Stimulation

I’ll guide you through a series of eye movements, taps, or sounds while you focus on the memory. This helps your brain reprocess the memory in a less distressing way.

3

Desensitization and Reprocessing

Over time, the memory often feels less intense, and you may start to see it from a more balanced perspective.

4

Reintegration

As the therapy continues, you may notice greater emotional stability, a shift in how you view past events and more confidence moving forward.

The Benefits of EMDR Therapy

Fast and Effective

Many people experience meaningful relief in fewer sessions than with traditional therapy.

Non-Invasive

EMDR does not require detailed discussion of the trauma, which can be helpful if it feels difficult to talk about.

Lasting Change

By resolving issues at their root, EMDR often leads to long-term emotional improvement.

Improved Confidence

As painful memories become less overwhelming, people often feel more empowered and confident.

Some clients may experience lightheadedness or vivid dreams, but these are typically temporary and subside after the session.

How is EMDR therapy differ from traditional talk therapy?

EMDR focuses on processing traumatic memories through eye movements rather than just discussing them, which can lead to faster emotional healing.
