Somatic Therapies

A Calm, Personal Approach To Therapy

Restore calm and balance by listening to the wisdom of your body.

What Are Somatic Therapies?

Somatic therapy is a gentle, body focused approach that supports healing by helping you reconnect with physical sensations, emotions and the nervous system. It can be especially helpful for processing stress, trauma or emotional tension that may be held in the body.

Rather than focusing only on thoughts, somatic therapy brings awareness to how experiences live in the body such as tension, numbness or restlessness. These are often messages from the nervous system that something hasn’t yet been fully processed. Somatic therapy gently supports that process.

The Process

How Somatic Therapy Works

1

Tuning into the Body

We begin by noticing sensations, breath, posture and any areas of tension or emotion that feel present.

2

Creating Safety and Grounding

We use calming techniques such as mindful breathing or body scans to help your body feel supported and at ease.

3

Releasing What Is Held

As your awareness grows, you may notice a softening of tension, changes in emotion or a sense of release or relief.

4

Building Regulation and Resilience

With time, this work can support better emotional regulation, reduced anxiety and a greater sense of inner balance.

More About the Process

What to Expect in a Session

Somatic sessions last up to one hour and may include talking, guided awareness, or simple body based exercises. Everything is led by what feels safe and comfortable for you.

Somatic therapy can be used on its own or as part of an integrative approach. It offers a gentle and powerful way to support healing on both physical and emotional levels.

Somatic Therapies FAQ

What is somatic therapy in simple terms?

Helps you understand and release stress or emotions held in the body. It works by increasing awareness of physical sensations and calming the nervous system.

Do I have to talk about trauma or past events?

No. Somatic work often helps by working with sensations and feelings directly. You only share what you feel ready for.

Is this like massage or physical therapy?

No. While we focus on the body, somatic therapy is a form of psychotherapy. It may include movement or touch in some models, but always with your consent and comfort.

Can it be combined with talking therapies?

Yes. Somatic approaches can complement other therapies such as CBT or psychodynamic work to support a more complete healing process.
